Korean Air Baggage Policy – Quick Guide

Carry-On Allowance

  • Economy: 1 carry-on bag (max 22 lbs) + 1 personal item.

  • Prestige & First Class: 2 carry-on bags (combined max 40 lbs) + 1 personal item.

  • Infants:

    • Domestic: 1 stroller + 1 car seat (no baggage allowance).

    • International: Same as adult + 1 stroller + 1 car seat + 1 extra bag (22 lbs, 45").

  • Special items: Small musical instruments allowed as carry-on (≤45").

Prohibited items: Explosives, flammable materials, large lithium batteries, etc.
Liquids: 100 ml max, all in 1L resealable bag.


 Checked Baggage Allowance

  • Economy: 1 free bag (≤62", ≤50 lbs).

  • Prestige & First Class: Free bags (up to 70 lbs each).

  • Number of free bags varies by route:

    • US (except Brazil): Economy (2 free), Prestige (2 free), First (3 free).

    • Brazil: Economy/Prestige (2 free), First (3 free).

    • Europe/Middle East/Africa/Oceania: Economy (1 free), Prestige (2 free), First (3 free).

    • Korea ↔ Asia: Economy (1 free), Prestige (2 free), First (3 free).

    • US ↔ Brazil: Economy/Prestige (2 free), First (3 free).

Extra Fees:

  • Overweight: $50–$200 (depends on route).

  • Oversized: $100–$400 (depends on route).

  • Additional bag: $70–$200 (varies by route).


Ways to Avoid Fees

  1. Travel with carry-on only.

  2. Book Prestige/First Class for more free bags.

  3. Join SkyPass program (elite members get extra free bags).

  4. Use Korean Air credit cards for free baggage perks.

  5. Watch codeshare rules (partner airline policy may apply).

  6. Pre-purchase baggage online (10–15% cheaper).

  7. Use SkyPass miles to pay for extra baggage.


 Baggage Transfer Rules

  • International → International: Bags usually transfer automatically.

  • Korea → Domestic: Must re-check bags (except throughfare to Busan).

  • USA, Canada, Australia, China, Japan, India, Russia: Must claim bags at first stop, then re-check for domestic connections.


Sports Equipment

  • Counts as part of free allowance.

  • Max: 32 kg (70 lbs), 292 cm (115").

  • Golf, ski, snowboard, scuba, bicycle, surfboard, fishing gear: No oversize fee if within weight/size.

  • Waivers:

    • ≤23 kg = free as 1 bag.

    • 23–32 kg = overweight fee applies.

    • 32 kg = not accepted.


Tip: Korean Air gives decent free baggage, especially on international routes, but always check your ticket type and route to avoid surprise fees.
